Lent/Ash Wednesday

I am not Catholic and don't know a ton amount about many Catholic traditions.  Easter has always been an extremely important holiday ("Holy Day") for my family and I remember being taught about the true meaning of Easter (Jesus' death and Resurrection not the bunny) from as young as I can remember.

This year, we are adding a new tradition to our Easter celebration.  Lent.  All I ever knew of lent was that people I worked with went out and got really drunk on Fat Tuesday and then some of them gave something up on Wednesday.  Three people also came to work each Ash Wednesday with ashes on their forehead.  I think I was 21 the first time I saw this, and actually went up to a lady I worked with and told her she had something on her forehead... I was beyond mortified!  Anyway, our church recognizes/commemorates Ash Wednesday/Lent by giving up something for the 40+ days leading up to Easter.

1. Sacrifice: I am giving up Facebook.  For those you who don't use Facebook, this probably seems silly.  But, for me, it is the ultimate time-sucker.  Because I'm at home most of time with the kiddos (and now homeschooling Katherine), it's my main connection to the outside world.  I'm planning to use the time studying my Bible, praying, and playing with my kids.

2. New Life: The kids and I are planting several herbs and flowers this week to symbolize new life.

3. Resurrection Cookies: I heard about these cookies last year, but didn't get to make them.  We will definitely make them this year.

What traditions does your family have for the Easter season?
